W
ho is Shat-R-Shield?

No one makes a better protective lamp than Shat-R-Shield. We pioneered this industry with the first coated fluorescent lamp in 1978, and we continue to be the leader today. Our exclusive processes for the coating of fluorescent, incandescent and HID lamps have brought protective lighting to a new level of safety and reliability. -back to top-

What is protective lighting?

Protective lighting is used to protect products, employees and worksites from lamp components, should a lamp be broken. These components can include glass, phosphors, sodium, krypton, manganese, mercury and other contaminants. -back to top-

Why do I need protective lighting?

Federal and/or state regulations require protective lighting in some industries such as food processing, foodservice, elevators and daycare centers. Other companies, such as package and container suppliers to the food industry, are required by their customers to use protective lighting as well. Although it is required in the food industry, protective lighting should be a consideration in every safety program to ensure the protection of products, employees and worksites. -back to top-

What makes Shat-R-Shield the best?

After decades of working side-by-side with distributors, OEMs, end-users and manufacturer's sales reps, Shat-R-Shield has developed the know-how to best serve its customers and the industry it created. From every phase of doing business, Shat-R-Shield offers the most thorough research and development, widest distribution, professional customer service and the safest/most reliable lighting products in the industry. -back to top-

Where can I buy Shat-R-Shield products?

Shat-R-Shield only sells through distribution. To find the stocking distributor (by State, Province, other) closest to your area, go to the Distributor Locator Page by clicking here. -back to top-

Can I ship my lamps to you and have them coated?

While Shat-R-Shield will allow distributors to send their own lamps for coating, the lamps will not be warranted with the Shat-R-Shield guarantee. We purchase lamps in bulk from the three largest lamp manufacturers, coat them with high quality plastics and sell them through distribution. This actually benefits the end-user because of our negotiated price structure with our suppliers. -back to top-

How much are Shat-R-Shield lamps compared to unprotected lamps, or to sleeve and end cap methods?

First, it is misleading to compare price on an unprotected lamp and a protected lamp, because you are comparing apples to oranges. However, when comparing Shat-R-Shield lamps to sleeve and end cap methods, Shat-R-Shield is less expensive over time. When you consider that with sleeve and end cap methods there is labor time and costs in assembly, light output loss and premature lamp burnout due to heat and oil build-up, Shat-R-Shield is less expensive over the life of the lamp. -back to top-

How much does the coating reduce light (lumen) output?

Shat-R-Shield clear coating reduces light (lumen) output by less than one percent (1%). -back to top-

How does Shat-R-Shield coating effect UV?

Shat-R-Shield’s standard coating on fluorescent lamps blocks ultraviolet emissions up to 390 nanometers (over 95% of the UV spectrum). Ultraviolet (UV) causes fading in fabric, degradation of paper, loss of vitamins and riboflavin, and adds to discoloration of food products. It can also be a problem for people suffering from a wide variety of illnesses because they are photosensitive. For instance, as many as 60% of lupus patients are photosensitive and are adversely effected by exposure to UV. -back to top-

Can you coat lamps not listed on your price sheet?

Yes. Shat-R-Shield currently has a list of almost 600 lamp types that we coat. And, even if the lamp you need is not currently on our list, there is a possibility that we can still coat it. There are several factors that will have to be determined. -back to top-

How can I clean a Shat-R-Shield lamp?

Since our lamps have a skin-tight coating, they can be completely immersed in a cleaning tank, rinsed, dried and quickly put back into operation. -back to top-

Can your lamps be used in wash down areas?

Shat-R-Shield lamps can be used in wash down areas if they are used in enclosed, gasketted fixtures in refrigerated areas, such as meat packaging plants. -back to top-

How do I recycle a coated lamp?

Plastic coated lamps can be recycled, however they often must be stripped of their coating before they can be recycled. Shat-R-Shield's Shat-R-Kote® can be easily removed from the lamp surface by slitting the coating and peeling it away from the lamp. The coating is 16 mils thick, so it peels away easily. Some recycling companies will strip the lamps for you, but there is often an added fee for this service. Shat-R-Shield has negotiated special pricing with the following recycling companies for the benefit of our distributors and their customers: -back to top-

How long do black lights last?

Black lights should be replaced after 7,000 hours of use because they deteriorate to levels ineffective for insect attraction. Shat-R-Shield places date labels directly on our black lights to help determine when their effectiveness has expired. -back to top-

How soon will the lamps be delivered?

If we have the lamp you request in stock, it is possible for the lamp to ship within the same week. If the lamp must be specially ordered, allow three weeks for delivery. -back to top-

What should I do if my lamps arrive damaged?

Due to 3rd party shipping services, damage is sometimes a problem. If you receive lamps that are damaged, here what you should do:
1) If the damage is obvious from the outside of the boxes, you should refuse those boxes that are damaged, then call our Customer Service Dept. (1-800-223-0853) to let us know the specific lamps and the number of cases refused.
2) If the damage is concealed and you do notice it until after the shipment has been signed for and the boxes have been opened, you should call the carrier and file a claim. We can not file a claim for you since you signed for the shipment and the lamps are in your possession. If you file a claim with the carrier, you should pay your invoice in full. Do not debit the invoice.
3) If you would like us to ship replacements for the damaged lamps, you should fax us a purchase order noting that these are replacements. (You may use the same PO and add "RPL" at the end). You will be invoiced for replacements due to damage during transportation. -back to top-
